Ionic liquids used to recycle cotton-poly textiles

Researchers in Australia have used ionic liquids to successfully separate polyester–cotton blended textiles, with polyester recovery rates claimed to be in the region of 99.5 per cent. Subsequently, work is now also underway to use this technology to spin new regenerated cotton fibres that are competitive with both viscose and lyocell.

Sweden Textile Water Initiative, which works with Swedish textile businesses such as H&M, Lindex and IKEA to reduce water, chemical and energy use in their global supply chains, has announced it is expanding to new countries in Asia and Africa after a successful pilot project in India.

Tests find 'cocktail' of PFCs in clothing

A major European research project which is in the process of exploring alternatives to perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in textiles, has discovered what has been described as a "cocktail of everything from C4 chemistry upwards", including 'C8' related contaminants on garments which brands believed had only been treated with C6-based chemistry.

Crystal Group to expand Higg Index use

Fast growing multi-billion dollar garment producer, Crystal Group, which makes clothing for brands such as Gap, M&S, Levi's, Uniqlo and VF Corporation, has unveiled its 2015 Sustainability Report which outlines impressive savings in water consumption per garment, plans to roll-out its adoption of the Higg Index and dramatic expansion plans for its Vietnamese manufacturing operations.

German sportswear giant Puma has used its latest annual report to outline ambitious sustainability goals, including the complete phase-out of poly-fluorinated hydrocarbons (PFCs), a ban on polyvinylchloride (PVC) and a commitment to carry out an environmental profit and loss assessment (E-P&L) every two years.

Oeko-Tex adds new flame retardant

Oeko-Tex has added a new bromine-free exhaust flame retardant from UK-based Avocet to its list of approved active chemical products. Cetaflam DB9 is applied during polyester textile dyeing and is said to reduce processing times and overall environmental impacts.
