BRUSSELS - An investigation by the European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) has raised environmental concerns about the use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) to make products, including textiles, less flammable.

ECHA found that non-polymeric aromatic BFRs are released into the environment throughout the product lifecycle, with the waste stage being a particular concern, and pollute due to their persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity.
