A recently concluded Life Cycle Assessment of Cotton Made in Africa, claims that cotton grown under this initiative can have up to a 40 per cent lower Greenhouse Gas Footprint,  as well as significant savings in water consumption due to the cotton being rain-fed.

Organic Cotton - down but not out
The not-for-profit Textile Exchange has released its sixth annual Organic Cotton Market Report, which reveals a massive 37 per cent drop in organic cotton production in 2011, despite a brand survey that indicated a high proportion of retailers would actually expand their use of organic cotton. The current top users of organic cotton include H&M, C&A, Nike and Inditex.n.

Sluggish global economic growth is hitting cotton production and mill use and contributing to a “bleak” outlook for cotton supply and use for 2012/13 according to the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC). Global cotton production and mill use are forecast at 25.9 million tons and 23.4 million tons respectively – an oversupply of 2.4 million tons.
