Primark expands chemicals testing pilot

Primark has announced the results of a pilot programme it carried out with six factories from its supply chain in China in which it looked chemicals used in the washing and dyeing process and also conducted waste water testing.

KEMI, the Swedish chemicals agency, claims current measures to reduce the use of four phthalates currently listed on Annex XIV of REACH - DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIBP – do not go far enough and is calling for further rules at EU and national levels to restrict their usage even more.

 More retailers slap ban on Angora

More UK fashion retailers including Topshop, ASOS and Marks and Spencer have opted to temporarily or permanently halt their production of angora clothing and accessories, in response to a video from animal rights organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which revealed the inhumane treatment of rabbits at angora farms in China.

The printed ETLG is a 100 + page  A5 booklet designed for manufacturers, retailers and buyers who are committed to reducing the impact of textiles on the environment and lists all the labels and environmental standards relevant to the global textile and clothing supply chain.

As well as covering raw materials, the 2014 edition of ETLG will offer information on social criteria, such as Fairtrade, Fair labour, SA8000 etc., and textile processing standards.

New additions will also include information on water standards, energy use, and sections on disposal and biodegradability.

EU Eco label  

EU EcoLabel changes textile criteria

A draft of new textile product criteria for the EU EcoLabel standard has just been approved at a meeting of the EU Ecolabel Regulatory Committee where it was agreed that cotton and other natural cellulosic fibres will have to contain a minimum content of organic or ‘IPM’ (integrated pest management) cottons.

Chinese trio in closed loop initiative

Employees from Fuji Xerox Co will wear uniforms developed through a polyester textile closed loop recycling system after Teijin Limited teamed up with apparel business, Onward Holdings Co, to design and manufacture a range of uniforms based on Tejin’s Eco Circle.
