YANGON — More than 6,300 factory workers in the Yangon region of Myanmar have now lost their jobs because of the coronavirus pandemic, according to trade union leaders.

The Confederation of Trade Unions in Myanmar (CTUM) says that 47 factories in Yangon have either closed or reduced their workforce, making 6,355 factory workers redundant.

Most of the factories make clothing, shoes and bags. The CTUM says at least 10 more factories have reduced their workforce since it compiled its figures, some of them temporarily but others permanently.
