Greenpeace's latest 'Detox Catwalk', which ranks apparel brands on their progress in adhering to its Detox Campaign criteria on chemical management, has singled out Nike and LiNing as 'greenwashers' while listing 16 other apparel brands as 'leaders' – among them Inditex, Puma, Mango, Esprit and Burberry.

Adidas sets new chemical management targets

In a bid to improve the transparency of its textile supply chain, the adidas Group has completed the full screening of all the chemicals used in the production of its apparel products. It says that by the end of 2015, 50 per cent of all its dyes and 10 per cent of all auxiliary chemicals will be bluesign approved as it strives towards a 'best in class' approach to chemical management. Speciality chemicals business Archroma has been short-listed for the Corporate Water Stewardship Award 2014, part of the Global Water Awards, for its Sustainable Effluent Treatment (SET) facility in Jamshoro, Pakistan, which is said to recover 80 per cent of water from the production process.

Cotton standard puts focus on lasting change

Control Union says that four per cent of farmers contracted to its Sustainable Fibre Programme (SFP) have now achieved certification. The figure, which equates to around 1,000 of the 25,000 farmers contracted to the programme in mid-2013 across four states in India, was confirmed at a very well-received sustainable textile workshop the accreditation body ran in Dusseldorf.

High cotton inventories, high cotton production and surplus capacities in China for man-made cellulose fibres means that Lenzing – maker of Tencel – sees a continued squeeze on its textile fibre prices. Sales revenues at the company fell by 8.7 per cent in 2013 to €1.91bn.
