H&M has become the second major retail brand to tell Ecotextile News that it will not be using any cotton in its clothing which has been sourced from the Omo Valley in Ethiopia.

Japanese textile giant Toray has said it plans to transition all of its polyester fibre production to ‘plant-based’ polyester where at least 30 per cent of the biopolymer is derived from waste molasses – a by-product of the sugar industry that is normally disposed of.

As well as covering raw materials, the 2014 edition of ETLG will offer information on social criteria, such as Fairtrade, Fair labour, SA8000 etc., and textile processing standards.

New additions will also include information on water standards, energy use, and sections on disposal and biodegradability.

Survey fiasco highlights perils of ‘ranking’ brands

A survey by Scandinavian NGO Grønn Hverdag (Green Living), which attempted to ‘rank’ the green credentials of leading Norwegian, Swedish and Danish clothing brands, has been abandoned after its methodology was slammed by many of its subjects – including H&M, Lindex and Gina Tricot.

H&M closes loop with recycled denim

Next month H&M will launch five new denim pieces made from recycled textile fibres collected from its ‘Garment Collecting Initiative’, which encourages customers to return unwanted clothing to H&M stores. The retailer says its long-term goal is to find a solution for reusing and recycling all textile fibres for new use.
