New research is now coming on-stream which shows that in addition to the harmful bio-accumulation of synthetic micro-fibres in marine organisms, harmful oceanic pollutants can lock on to these fibres, which magnifies their impact up the food chain. By John Mowbray.
Increased amounts of synthetic microfibres floating free in the world’s oceans are a big problem not only due to their bioaccumulation inside aquatic organisms, but because they can also operate as platforms for the adsorption of potentially hazardous chemicals such as phthalates, PCB’s and heavy metals.
