China's pursuit of water security poses an "existential threat" to the fashion industry as policy makers increasingly target textiles –- one of the country's most polluting, water intensive sectors which emits "lots of wastewater for not a lot of money."

Retailers pledge organic cotton support

TEXAS – After recent production falls, the future looks a little brighter for the organic cotton sector, according to a new market report published today by US-based not-for-profit Textile Exchange. The report says that 71 per cent of retailers it surveyed will boost their use of organic cotton in 2013 with C&A topping the lists of organic cotton users by volume and the percentage growth over the previous year.

Spider venom could strike at cotton pests

BRISBANE – Scientists in Australia have found that the venom of the tarantula spider could be potentially used as a new bioinsecticide to protect cotton crops from the devastating effects of the bollworm pest. The discovery of a new protein which could be ingested by the bollworm, could not only help to lower the use of synthetic pesticides and their harmful environmental impacts, but also address the problem of insect resistance to chemical pesticides.

Leading US apparel retailers Gap Inc., Limited Brands and PVH have all become signatories to the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Programme and have been joined by new Associate Members: the European Outdoor Group and German Fashion as the ZDHC looks to ramp up its progress to reduce the environmental impact of textiles in their global supply chains.

M&S to gather supply chain feedback

Marks & Spencer will use mobile technology to gather feedback directly from 22,500 workers in its clothing supply chains in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh as part of a new deal it has signed with social enterprise technology provider, Good World Solutions. The retailer will carry out four surveys over the next year, collecting feedback on subjects such as working conditions, job satisfaction and training.

Two thirds of chemical firms flout REACH measures

Two thirds of inspected downstream chemical users have been found to be non-compliant with one or more provisions of REACH or CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) obligations in a major European survey of more than 1,000 companies. Non-compliance issues included registration and notification contraventions, not providing proper information on hazardous chemicals downstream, and poor application of risk management measures.

Net-a-Porter and GCC launch eco-collections

Luxury retailer Net-A-Porter and Livia Firth's Green Carpet Challenge (GCC) have launched a new collection of clothing made by British designers to the “highest sustainable standards”, a fifth of the proceeds of which will be donated to AIDS awareness organisation, RED. Christopher Bailey, Victoria Beckham, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Roland Mouret have all designed two pieces – each in line with GCC’s “ethical benchmarking.”

FTC proposes wool labelling changes

As part of its current systematic review of all current FTC rules and guides, The US Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comment on proposed changes to its Wool Products Labelling Rules, which require that labels on wool products such as textiles disclose the manufacturer’s or marketer’s name, the country where the product was processed or manufactured, and information about the fibre content. Comments must be received by November 25, 2013.
