Cotton Australia and Cotton Incorporated have today launched the new ‘Cotton Leads’ program, which aims to highlight the responsible and transparent way that cotton is grown in Australia and the United States.

Denim  

Sweden wants tighter rules on textile chemicals

The Swedish Chemicals Agency recently submitted new proposals to the EU, which would further restrict the placing of textiles on the market that contain traces of hormone-disrupting nonylphenol  (NP) derived from detergents, scouring agents and other surfactants used in textile production.

CO2 dyeing: slower progress than first thought

Adidas executive, Molly Claiborne-Iskorkutan, suggested roll-out of Dyecoo’s much-heralded CO2 waterless dyeing technology is moving “slower than we would like” during a lively seminar today at the TITAS event in Taiwan, where she outlined the sports apparel giant’s ambitious goals on environmental sustainability, including its ZDHC commitments.

Bamboo lyocell denim at Intertextile

Norwegian fabric supplier Nånkåtån, will present what it claims to be the first ever non-cotton stretch denim fabric made from lyocell bamboo at Intertextile Shanghai on October 21st to October 24th. Ecotextile News talks to Nånkåtån CEO Jonny Kristiansen to find out more prior to its launch.

Fishing nets  

Healthy Seas Initiative gains momentum

A project which upcycles discarded fishing nets into a 100 per cent regenerated nylon yarn for textiles, apparel and carpets, now used by Adidas in its swimwear lines and Interface floor coverings, has revealed its expansion plans, including establishing fishing net recovery points across Europe and increasing its use of recycled materials.

Spider silk nears commercial production

US biotech firm Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, which develops genetically modified spider silk-based fibres, has announced the launch of its first commercial production program with the recent hatching of its first batch of ‘Monster Silk’ silkworms and expects to be producing metric ton quantities by mid-2014.

Apparel giant VF Corporation, which controls brands such as Timberland, The North Face, Vans and Wrangler, has joined a coalition to advocate for innovative climate and clean energy policies and follows on from the company's decision to set up three new Global Innovation Centres for textile and apparel research.
