 US sports and outdoor clothing business Columbia Sportswear has launched a new clothing collection and recycling programme which will see it partnering with I:Collect, the Swiss-based business which provides end-to-end textile re-use and recycling solutions to apparel businesses.

Leading Chinese PU coated fabric producer Xiefu has teamed up with polymer materials supplier Covestro – formerly Bayer Materials Science – by signing up to its Covestro's 'Insqin' Partner Manufacturer Program. The two companies will now collaborate to promote sustainable PU materials in sectors such as fashion apparel and footwear.

Brands fall foul in China textile rankings
 Next, Hugo Boss, Victoria's Secret, Polo Ralph Lauren and Armani are among those bringing up the rear in an evaluation system which measure apparel brands' performance in managing the environmental impacts of factories in their supply chains in China, while adidas, H&M, Levi and M&S top the list. Recycled cotton as a feedstock for viscose fibres?

Cotton could be recycled and used as feedstock in the production of man-made cellulosic fibres such as viscose and Tencel – that's according to the findings of recent laboratory work where researchers successfully dissolved cotton sheets and spun them into new fibres using a unique, patented method.

Recycled PET demand to remain solid despite challenges

Cheaper crude oil prices in future could reduce the value of recycled PET, says UK-based consultancy PCI Fibres. Yet, the likelihood is that demand for RPET for making recycled polyester yarns will remain strong, as countries look closer at plastic bans on landfill – although collection rates will still need to improve significantly.

VF Corporation has launched a groundbreaking new method to screen for hazardous trace chemicals in textile formulations before they enter the mill. Costing only around US$50 per chemical sample, it is claimed the new ‘Chem-IQ’ process for the textile industry can pinpoint minute traces of more than 400 potentially hazardous substances before they are ever used in production.
