Greenpeace new report  

Greenpeace report spotlights kids' clothing

The huge challenges faced by clothing brands in eliminating toxic chemicals from their supply chain are highlighted by the latest Greenpeace report which found that 50 of the 82 children’s clothing products they analysed –from 12 leading clothing brands – contained Nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). Levels ranged from just above 1 mg/kg (the limit of detection) up to 17,000 mg/kg.

Technical outdoor fabric brand Gore says it has completed a project to remove the potential for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) contamination in its full range of functional textiles and membranes throughout its supply chain. PFOA is a potentially hazardous substance associated with the production of certain types of fluorine-based stain and water repellant textile finishes.

The publishers of Ecotextile News will publish a new, updated and improved version of the Eco-Textile Labelling Guide in May 2014.

The printed ETLG is a 100 + page  A5 booklet designed for manufacturers, retailers and buyers who are committed to reducing the impact of textiles on the environment and lists all the labels and environmental standards relevant to the global textile and clothing supply chain.

As well as covering raw materials, the 2014 edition of ETLG will offer information on social criteria, such as Fairtrade, Fair labour, SA8000 etc., and textile processing standards.

New additions will also include information on water standards, energy use, and sections on disposal and biodegradability.

Viscose polymers found in UK fish

One-third of fish caught off the south-west coast of England were found to have traces of viscose textile fibre, as well as nylon, and polyester fibre and plastics from polyester bottles and synthetic polymers found in sanitary items, according to a new study conducted by scientists from Plymouth University.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has written to its global suppliers to inform them they will be dropped immediately if they subcontract work to factories that haven’t been authorised to supply the giant US discounter. The move comes after a deadly fire at a textile mill in Bangladesh, which supplied clothing to Walmart, but wasn’t authorised to do so.
