Report proposes 'chemical tax' on textiles

A new Swedish report examines how a proposed tax on textiles and footwear that contain hazardous chemicals could reduce annual purchases of consumer products that contain these substances by about 60 per cent – while at the same time raising SEK 200 million (US$31M) for the government’s coffers.

Spanish textile technology firm Jeanologia has developed a new version of its laser and ozone finishing technology that can be used for both knitwear and continuous fabric lengths. The company is already well known for its technology that uses lasers to finish denim garments, which can save energy, water and the use of potentially hazardous chemicals.

Made in Italy?

Greenpeace has questioned the legitimacy of ‘Made in Italy’ marketing by some luxury clothing brands as it uses the Milan Fashion Week to set its sights on the use of hazardous chemicals in luxury clothing. Versace, Louis Vuitton, Dolce&Gabbana and Burberry are among the high end fashion brands cited in recent Greenpeace report into children’s clothing.

Sustainability Day returns to Texworld

Dystar has released its latest sustainability report which details how the business continues to make encouraging progress in reducing GHG emissions, water use and waste generation. The business slashed its water use per tonne of product manufactured by 39 per cent between 2011 and 2012, while GHG emissions were cut by around 13 per cent in the same period. Waste generation was also cut by 12.5 per cent.

The publishers of Ecotextile News will publish a new, updated and improved version of the Eco-Textile Labelling Guide in May 2014.

The printed ETLG is a 100 + page  A5 booklet designed for manufacturers, retailers and buyers who are committed to reducing the impact of textiles on the environment and lists all the labels and environmental standards relevant to the global textile and clothing supply chain.

As well as covering raw materials, the 2014 edition of ETLG will offer information on social criteria, such as Fairtrade, Fair labour, SA8000 etc., and textile processing standards.

New additions will also include information on water standards, energy use, and sections on disposal and biodegradability.

Sustainable cotton growth for Ikea

Swedish homewear textiles giant Ikea has more than doubled its use of sustainable cotton in 2013 to 72 per cent of the cotton it uses, up from 34 per cent in in 2012. The home textile giant also aims to source 100 per cent of its cotton from ‘more sustainable sources’ by the end of its financial year 2015.

A Swedish producer of a fluorine-free water repellent textile coatings that also uses organic catalysts derived from fruit, has entered into a new collaboration with a Taiwanese textile manufacturer to offer 100 per cent recycled polyester fabrics that are claimed to be highly functional yet sustainable.

IKEA widens 'sustainable cotton' scope 

Global home products giant IKEA ramped up its use of ‘preferred cottons’ to 34 per cent of its total cotton use in 2012, compared to 24 per cent in 2011. The company’s definition of ‘preferred cottons’ has expanded to include cotton produced ‘in-line’ with the Better Cotton Initiative, as well as farmers in the USA and Australia using ‘other sustainability standards’.
