YANGON - An exiled Myanmar trade union leader has condemned a statement from the country's ruling military junta in which it appeared to hold out a promise of free trade unions for workers.
Khaing Zar Aung, the president of the Industrial Workers' Federation of Myanmar (IWFM), who is living in exile in Germany for her safety, said the promise from the Ministry of Labour was a lie.
"It is a lie to the public, and it was done only to avoid action against the junta by the ILO Commission of Inquiry," she said in a post on Twitter which accompanied an open letter from the Confederation of Trade Unions Myanmar (CTUM).
