YANGON – Workers’ rights abuses have reached record highs in supply chain countries including Myanmar, according to the International Trade Union Confederation’s (ITUC) latest Global Rights Index.
Restrictions on the right to establish or be represented by a trade union were amongst the ITUC’s most regressive findings, impacting as many as 113 countries, up from 106 in 2021.
Myanmar has been under siege since last year's military coup. Exiled Myanmar trade union leader Khaing Zar Aung recently called on western brands and retailers to sever all times with garment factories in her home country to support the movement to restore democracy.
