Fairtrade cotton promises to address both environmental and social challenges, yet it has often been overshadowed by other cotton standards despite Fairtrade having high consumer recognition by comparison.
Now, with organic cotton seemingly in some disarray following the suspensions of certification bodies related to fraud in India, has the time come for a renewed push from Fairtrade cotton?
Over recent years, the Fairtrade production standard has been joined by a textile standard, a climate standard and different sourcing models. Production and sales have been growing, albeit slowly, although Fairtrade cotton’s uptake still beats many rivals’ performance.
