New York is set to be the first US state to implement its own fashion sustainability law. Major brands and retailers would have to reveal what they are doing to reduce their environmental and social impacts, with heavy penalties for those which fall short.
The Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act would apply to only larger companies which operate in the state, but the importance of New York City as a market is such that no significant player would willingly pull out, making it a potential lever for the entire industry.
Under the plans, fashion companies doing business in New York, with annual revenues of more than US$100 million, would be required to map out at least half of their supply chains, from raw materials to final production.
