HAWASSA - Four out of ten garment workers on Ethiopia's flagship industrial park lost their jobs after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, a new academic study reveals.
Entitled 'The market-reach of pandemics: Evidence from female workers in Ethiopia’s ready-made garment industry', it is based on a telephone survey of nearly 4,000 female workers.
The report, published in the peer-reviewed World Development journal, says the employment of female workers in Ethiopia’s garment industry changed dramatically due to a sharp drop in demand during the COVID-19 crisis.
