HAWASSA - 44 per cent of female garment workers in Ethiopia’s largest industrial park have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic and virtually none have been able to find alternative employment, according to a new study.
Researchers from the World Bank; New York University Abu Dhabi; Vassar College, New York State; and the University of Oxford teamed up to carry out the ongoing study of women who work in garment factories in Ethiopia’s largest industrial park in the city of Hawassa.
The project aims to interview around 5,000 garment workers on a bi-weekly basis for the duration of six months to document how their lives are changing during the COVID-19 crisis.
