COLOMBO - The Sri Lankan government is being urged to modernise the country's garment and textiles industry following the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The recommendation is contained in a report, 'COVID-19 & Beyond - The impact on the Labour Market of Sri Lanka', which also calls for the establishment of a comprehensive social security system.
The report, prepared by the country's Commissioner General of Labour, Ananda Wimalaweera, reveals the results of an e-survey of 2,764 private sector businesses, carried out by the Sri Lankan Department of Labour, to assess the scale of the problems faced by employers.
