PHNOM PENH - Workers' rights campaigners have urged Japanese brands Asics and Muji to pressure a Cambodian supplier to compensate one of its workers who was falsely imprisoned on his bosses' evidence after being elected to lead a new union.
Chea Chan, who worked for Wing Star Shoes in Cambodia, which supplies both of the Japanese brands, was jailed for 180 days after he was prosecuted on what the US-based Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) describes as "obviously false and retaliatory criminal charges".
