BRUSSELS - European Union proposals to make companies liable for human rights and environmental impacts in their global supply chains have been dealt a major blow today when they failed to achieve the approval of the European Council.

A vote on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) - postponed at the last minute earlier this month after Germany signalled its intention to abstain - again failed when it became clear there was insufficient support for the legislation.
