BRUSSELS – The Environmental Coalition on Standards (ECOS) has today published a report which explains how a more sustainable approach to garment design could dramatically reduce the industry’s environmental impact while supporting the circular economy.
The document explores current standards and initiatives that it deems insufficient in adequately tackling fashion’s vast waste problem, and states that more needs to be done to establish a culture based around reusability, ‘sustainable’ materials and traceability.
ECOS details nine areas in which it feels systemic change is required to create a framework that champions circularity, ensures product durability, scales recycling and repair services and hands end-of-life responsibility back to the brands and manufacturers.
