BATH - Global risk consultants Verisk Maplecroft say that actions taken by the US and UK over concerns about the alleged use of forced labour in the Xinjiang region of China could "sound a death knell" for imports from the region.
A new insight report by Sofia Nazalya, a human rights analyst with Verisk Maplecroft, says the US import ban announced last month will ramp up pressure on companies to seek alternative suppliers.
Nazalya adds that proposed measures in the UK, while weaker than the US action, could also ultimately serve to deter brands and retailers from sourcing from Xinjiang.
