CLERMONT-FERRAND – Bioplastics firm Carbios has strengthened its patent portfolio after successfully using its recycling technology to produce virgin-grade plastic bottles from textile waste.
Carbios’ enzymatic polyester depolymerisation process can yield a material’s intact core monomers, which are fit for reuse.
“I am delighted by the major breakthroughs achieved in the development of the first highly efficient enzymatic recycling process, which has been developed by Carbios and its partners,” said Professor Uwe Bornscheuer, of the company’s scientific committee.
“This innovation is now further underlined by the granted patents. I am convinced these achievements and inventions represent an excellent basis for the creation of a circular economy for the widely used polyester PET,” he added.
