BARCELONA – A new manifesto for cotton and sustainability has been launched by Cotton Diaries a global community headed up by Marzia Lanfranchi that’s committed to improving the environmental footprint of cotton supply networks.
The manifesto, which was launched earlier this month on World Cotton Day, looks closely at certification and traceability saying that certification is just a ‘starting point’ and apparel brands need to go one step further towards meaningful due diligence.
“Sustainable cotton is caught in something of a certification and Mass Balance trap, where brands effectively outsource their responsibility to schemes that promise benefits, while rarely being able to link a brand’s sourcing to clear, measurable and verifiable impacts,” noted Ecotextile News contributor Simon Ferrigno who is supporting Lanfranchi’s efforts.
