OAKLAND - The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) has rejected a plea to suspend the use of the score it applies to leather in its Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) over claims that it is unfair.
In a formal letter, 13 trade bodies representing the global leather industry had requested the suspension of leather’s MSI score pending reviews of the methodologies and data it uses.
It claimed the use of “inappropriate methodologies” and “out-of-date, unrepresentative, inaccurate and incomplete data” had led to leather being burdened with a disproportionately high Higg Index score.
