LEICESTER – The mayor of Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby, has written to UK fashion retailers including ASOS, New Look, River Island, Next and Boohoo, urging them to demonstrate that their stock isn’t produced using exploited labour.
Authorities within the city and indeed across the UK remain on high alert after evidence surfaced that workers in some factories are paid as little as £3.50 and operate without adequate safety provisions.
In calling on fashion brands to comply with ongoing investigations, Soulsby said: “We have been working for some time to tackle this challenge but it isn’t something the local authority can solve alone, nor is it Leicester’s problem alone.”
