BRUSSELS - More than 100 civil society organisations and trade unions have now signed an open letter calling on the European Union (EU) to introduce effective legislation to address environmental and human rights abuses in corporate supply chains.
The letter, which calls for a so-called mandatory due diligence law, is being publicly released ahead of the Finnish EU Presidency’s event, Business and Human Rights: Towards a Common Agenda for Action, today in Brussels.
It would make companies and financial institutions legally obliged to identify, prevent and mitigate abuses, and also hold them to account for potential abuses and harm in their domestic and global supply chains and operations.
