BEIJING – Ma Jun, Environmentalist & Director of the Beijing-based Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE), says he was ‘shocked’ to find some chemical giants don’t even know the names of their textile intermediate suppliers and points to a link between the recently deadly explosion at Jiangsu Tianjiyai Chemical Co. and the continued drive for low cost fashion.
During a hard-hitting interview for the August edition of Ecotextile News – due for publication on the 29th of July, he said the brand culture to seek the cheapest materials only encourages environmental and safety risks in the upstream textile chemicals sector, resulting in companies “cutting corners” to minimise costs.
