LONDON – Mary Creagh MP, chair of the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) inquiry into fast fashion, has written directly to ASOS, Boohoo & PrettyLittleThing, Missguided and Amazon UK, demanding a response to questions raised over buying practices which force manufacturers to pay “illegally low wages.”
Inspired by what the cross-party committee chair described as “shocking evidence” received by the inquiry, the letters have given brands the opportunity to give their side of the story and answer allegations made around the practices of high street and online fashion retailers.
The question of “Do you incinerate unsold or returned stock?” promises to hold brands’ feet to the fire, with little room for avoiding the issue – and with any failure to respond inevitably being interpreted negatively by the committee and public alike.
