MEMPHIS – A new integrated data collection, measurement and verification procedure that documents US cotton production practices and their environmental impact has been launched today at the on-going Cotton Sourcing USA Summit in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The ‘US Cotton Trust Protocol’ was unveiled by Cotton Council International President Ted Schneider as part of a series of talks on how the US cotton industry intends to meet its 2025 sustainability goals.
A pilot program using the new protocol will be launched in 2019 and is expected to be fully implemented by the 2020 cotton crop year.
“We know that U.S. cotton growers continue to embrace new technologies and management techniques that reduce impact and increase yield, but today’s textile industry needs more than just our word,” explained Schneider. “The Trust Protocol is meant to address that need with a tangible and transparent snapshot of U.S. cotton growing practices and the gains resulting from them.”
