WASHINGTON DC – US civil societies are urging the US government to swiftly implement its previously announced raft of sustainable procurement rules for buyers across all federal departments, while also calling on the European Union to implement a similar scheme.
First announced by the Biden-Harris administration in August 2023, the Sustainable Products and Services procurement rule will include requirements to prioritise sustainable products and services to the maximum extent possible. This will include requiring major US federal government contractors to both inventory and disclose greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) (including Scope 3) as well as requiring contractors to set science based emission reduction targets.
