SYDNEY - A new report highlights the complexity of the sustainability challenges facing the Australian cotton industry - including key insights on greenhouse gas emissions and water use.
The 2022 Australian Cotton Sustainability Update, published by Cotton Australia and the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, says the sector has made significant sustainability gains but still has plenty of scope for improvement.
The report shows an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - fuelled by a significant increase in growers' use of nitrogen fertiliser - from 2021 to 2022, but also claims a 52% reduction in water use since 1997.
