LOS ANGELES – A US Department of Labor survey has found that Californian garment workers producing clothes for major brands and retailers are still being subject to wage theft and illegal pay practices.
It comes more than a year after California passed the Garment Worker Protection Act (SB62) which was supposed to ban piece rate pay and put an end to wage theft across the state’s apparel industry.
However, the Department of Labor's 2022 Southern California Garment Survey, based on data from more than 50 contractors and manufacturers, found that 32% of contractors were still paying garment workers piece-rate wages.
