CALIFORNIA – The Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, has signed the Garment Worker Protection Act (SB62), putting an end to wage theft across the state’s apparel industry.
After years of campaigning, workers’ rights activists have fought to ensure that the 45,000+ people which make up California’s garment manufacturing workforce are entitled a minimum wage.
Senator Maria Elena Durazo, who spearheaded Senate Bill 62, took to Twitter to celebrate the victory, and said: “We are one step closer to ending wage theft and holding brands accountable for [the] exploitation they have enabled. Ethical fashion is the future!”
