YANGON - Fashion retailer Primark is to stop sourcing from Myanmar following what was claimed to be the most comprehensive study so far into the human rights implications of continuing to do business in the country.
The Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI), which commissioned the independent study, is urging brands and retailers sourcing from Myanmar to reassess their presence in the country - but it stopped short of telling them to withdraw.
A Primark spokesperson said: “The ETI report makes for very difficult reading. Its findings show there has been a significant deterioration in the situation in Myanmar which poses significant challenges to our ability to ensure the standards we require to protect the safety and rights of the people who make our clothes and products.
