VANCOUVER - Athletic apparel retailer Lululemon is partnering with sustainable materials company Genomatica to create a lower impact, plant-based nylon for its sportswear.
The bio-based material has the same molecular structure as nylon - so would not be biodegradable - but it would reduce reliance on fossil fuels by replacing the conventional nylon used in the company's sportswear.
Genomatica uses biotechnology and fermentation to convert plant-based ingredients into chemical building blocks which can be converted to pellets and yarns to make nylon.
