SAN FRANCISCO – Environmental NGO Stand.Earth has released a new report which addresses the fashion industry’s reliance on fossil fuels like coal, outlining problem areas within the supply chain before making a case for drastic industry change.
Fashion Forward: A Roadmap to Fossil Free Fashion is a timely release following the news that Chinese textile giant Hengli plans to tap into its abundant coal reserves to mass produce polyester yarn.
UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said in July that: “There is no such thing as clean coal, and coal should have no place in any rational recovery plan.”
With estimations that industry is still way off reducing its environmental impact in-line with the 2oC Paris Climate Agreement target, Stand.Earth has pin-pointed five broad areas in which the fashion sector can strive to create transformative change.
