PHNOM PENH – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has called on the country’s micro-financial institutions and commercial banks to consider temporarily suspending loan repayments for garment workers whose factories have been impacted by raw material shortages in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The country’s garment manufacturing industry was last month warned that as many as 10 per cent of its factories could be forced to close until suppliers in China re-commenced with shipments.

Though Cambodia welcomed new shipments of textiles, zips and buttons from China yesterday, which will offer some respite for native producers, it’s feared further disruption could be on the horizon, meaning an uncertain few weeks awaits workers.
