DHAKA – The Bangladesh Accord, which has held responsibility for safety activities in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) factories since its 2013 inception, now has a date for the handover of its jurisdiction.
Following a meeting of the Transitional Monitoring Committee (TMC) held at the nation’s Ministry of Labour and Employment, it has been decided that the process will start next week with the transition of responsibility for around 25 facilities.
Safety regulation in the country’s garment sector has been the subject of much debate since the Rana Plaza collapse over five years ago, but, regardless of individuals’ opinions on the matter, the Accord beginning to hand over its operations represents a landmark moment for Bangladesh’s largest industry.
