BERLIN - A formal complaint has been lodged against the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) over loans to one of Uzbekistan’s largest cotton producers which has been accused of human rights violations and land grabs.
The Uzbek Forum for Human Rights has made the complaint about Indorama Agro, part of the Singapore-based Indorama Corporation, to the EBRD's Independent Project Accountability Mechanism (IPAM).
It alleges multiple violations across Indorama Agro’s operations in the Syrdarya and Kashkadarya regions of Uzbekistan despite it receiving $130 million in loans from EBRD, and also the International Finance Corporation (IFC), to modernise cotton production.
