OTTAWA - The Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) is to investigate sportswear giant Nike for allegedly benefiting from the use of forced labour in the Xinjiang region of China.
Forced labour complaints against Nike Canada - and also gold mining company Dynasty - were filed with the federal government agency last year by a coalition of 28 civil society organisations.
Ombudsperson Sherri Meyerhoffer has now confirmed she is not happy with the responses provided by either company and has decided to launch independent fact-finding investigations into both of them.
