AMSTERDAM - The Netherlands has become the third country to accuse China of genocide over the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in the Xinjiang region which produces more than a fifth of the world's cotton.
The Dutch parliament passed a non-binding motion saying that China's treatment of ethnic minorities in the region amounted to genocide, the first European country to do so after similar moves by the US and Canada.
Up to two million Uyghur Muslims are detained in Xinjiang where many are reportedly used as forced labour in the cotton industry. Barristers in London recently issued the first legal opinion that China's actions in the region amounted to crimes against humanity including genocide.
