WASHINGTON – The United States administration has triggered a mechanism requesting the Mexican government investigate alleged rights violations at a garment facility in the city of Aguascalientes.
Political pressure is being exerted after trade unions filed a petition with the US Department of Labor alleging that a facility in which denim garments are sewn had sought to disrupt workers’ union-related activities and force them to accept the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.
Under the terms of the USMCA Rapid Response Labor Mechanism, the United States can take action if an individual factory in Mexico is found to be non-compliant with domestic freedom of association and collective bargaining laws.
