ANTANANARIVO - The IndustriALL global trade union is supporting the case of a Madagascan garment worker who spent nine months in a jail said to be among the world's worst for posting the outcome of union negotiations on social media.
Sento Chang was only released from Madagascar’s Antanimora prison - listed among the worst in the world by the Human Rights Watch NGO - after a presidential pardon following protests in the streets by trade unionists.
Unions from Madagascar taking part in the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, are now challenging the sentencing, and calling upon the island nation’s government to stop violating workers’ rights.
