BRUSSELS - Member states of the European Union are reportedly poised to back calls for a ban on the destruction of unsold clothing to reduce the amount of waste produced by the fashion and textiles industry.
Several leading brands and retailers have previously been accused of destroying stock which has been returned by online consumers rather than bothering to re-sell, repair or recycle unsold products.
Ministers of the European Council will next week agree their position on proposed European Union (EU) ecodesign requirements for sustainable products including a ban on the destruction of unsold apparel and footwear.
