BRUSSELS - The European Commission has published proposals to protect consumers from greenwashing including restrictions on new environmental labels, and requirements for green claims to be backed by scientific evidence.
A draft version of the commission’s Green Claims Directive was published in full today with more details on what counts as greenwashing in specific sectors expected to follow in the coming weeks.
The Green Claims Directive was drawn up after European Commission analysis found that more than half of environmental claims made for goods and services were “vague, misleading or based on unfounded information”.
