GAZIANTEP - Fashion brands and retailers sourcing from the area of Turkey hit by last month's earthquake are being urged by campaigners to act to protect workers in their supply chains.
The PayYourWorkers coalition is calling on companies to pay suppliers on time; ensure workers receive their full wages - or severance in the case of layoffs; and make sure factories do not reopen until they are safe.
Some 1,616 garment and 1,290 textile companies are said to operate in the 11 provinces affected by the earthquake, with a third of Turkey's apparel and textile workers employed in the region.
