MELBOURNE – Ahead of Melbourne Fashion Week, academics at Monash University’s Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI) have released a report in which they call on the country’s government and apparel sector to reduce fashion’s carbon footprint.

According to the MSDI’s Circular Economy Textiles Team, Australia’s raw material footprint per capita is almost double the OECD’s benchmark, making it amongst the leading countries for clothing consumption.

In a bid to reduce this impact, the researchers have set out seven recommendations for industry and government to implement, including a ban on the destruction of finished goods, an increase in the utilisation of recycled materials and the introduction of an extended producer responsibility (EPR) scheme.
